The Diary of Perpetua Is Now Streaming
The Thorn in Theaters Monday and Tuesday
We saw a screener to The Thorn, which will be in theaters Monday and Tuesday only through Fathom Events.
What started as a dramatic presentation of scripture to a youth group has blossomed into a compelling piece of theatre captured on film that gives Cirque du Soleil a run for its money!
The film/musical is a look at the big picture of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation -- told mostly through movement -- by the Apostle John to a boy who visits the beloved disciple's cave on Patmos with the intention of stealing. He leaves with something priceless: a new identity.
The cave scenes are shot at a beach, but the story unfolds on a stage, and they use both the theatric and cinematic approaches seamlessly.
Pray The Thorn gives many a fresh look at the best-selling book of all time!
Living
A few hours earlier, over lunch -- with a friend from Germany we have known since she was a toddler and is now flying private jets -- the tag on my tea had this quote:
The great and glorious masterpiece of man is to live with purpose.--Michel de Montaigne
They could have put it before the closing credits of Living.
It's told in fascinating fashion, but, well, there's a purpose to that.
It's a basic rule of script writing that you introduce the protagonist first, so the audience knows who to follow. That's not the case in Living. We first meet a young man on his first day at London's County Hall in the Public Works Department. This film mostly tells the story of Bill Nighy's character, Mr. Williams. We never learn his first name, which is fitting for life in a British bureaucracy in 1953. The role has earned Nighy an Oscar nomination, and for good reason! But this film is as much about the next generation learning how to live as it is about Mr. Williams doing that at the very end of his life.
These days I very rarely recommend films that don't come out of the Christian film industry, but I do wonder if the writers had help from Holy Spirit, because there was so much they got right. So right that it earned Kazuo Ishiguro an Oscar nomination for Writing -- Adapted Screenplay. Certainly they started with great source material: Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich.
Here's the one caveat I must mention to parents and any addicted to porn: There's one scene with a strip tease, and a woman takes off her top. The audience is watching from behind, but if I were watching it again, which I expect I will, I would look away at that moment.
That incident is not in the screenplay. Appreciate your prayers for me as I'm preparing to submit a couple of screenplays. Once they leave the screenwriter's hands anything can happen, and the only recourse a screenwriter has is removing his or her name. One of my profs in grad school had to do that.

Last night we were blessed to see The Chosen on Times Square at the AMC Empire Theatre. During the credits we noticed that three of the cast members had seen it with us! My husband and I met in San Francisco in 1962 and plunged for 14 years into the occult/psychedelic New Age “revival” that exploded throughout the Bay Area. In the mid-80s, we returned to college in Oregon to try to make something of ourselves, but we continued to be plagued by sin, the devil, and our lostness. In 1976, not long after I graduated, I got uterine cancer & was scheduled for a hysterectomy. I hadn’t been able to have children in our 15 years of marriage, but several days before the scheduled operation, I received a little booklet about how Jesus Christ still heals today. As I read the words, “It is a simple matter for Christ to put His hand on the chaos that is cancer and bring order,” Heaven opened up, and a river of life flowed through me. I met my Savior, who told me I was going to have a baby. My doctor confirmed my healing and canceled the hysterectomy. (I later learned he was a Christian who’d prayed for me.) I was 35 years old. A few weeks later, my husband was convicted of his sin and received Christ. As God led us out of our old life, He led us into a version of the Jesus Movement that was going on in Oregon and Washington among some of the established churches where we saw and experienced many other wonderful miracles. I would LOVE to see such a revival once again, and many of us here in Washington are praying for it.

Superspreader: The Rise of #LetUsWorship
Here were some of my thoughts after seeing Superspreader just off of Union Square, NYC. The documentary tells the story of Sean Feucht and the rise of the Let Us Worship movement:
Feucht was called a superspreader by gathering people in the height of the lockdowns to worship, but (spoiler alert he shared in an interview about the film): There were no outbreaks linked to any of these events. But Feucht pointed out in the film that Jesus was the real Superspreader. This film is a picture of how his Kingdom is expanding. Glory to God!

The Matter of Life
Tracy Robinson was on Pray with Others Live today talking about her film, The Matter of Life. We’re reposting my article about Robinson’s film because exactly two weeks after the draft majority opinion of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked to Politico, the film will be in theaters, helping people make sense of what abortion is. During Robinson’s November 30, 2021, appearance, on the eve of the Supreme Court opening statements for the Dobbs case, on Pray with Others Live Judy McDonough said, “We have a great God who’s going to time it perfectly.” He certainly did!
This episode of Pray with Others Live was nominated for the Best Justice - Prayer and Best Justice - Sanctity of Life awards at the at the Content2022 Film Festival and Media Summit.

I worked on this three years ago, in Alberta, Canada, as a performer and as acting coach. It was released today on International Women's Day.

I'm so pleased with how it turned out, and not only was it worth the wait, but it's coming out when more people are talking about the sanctity of life in the womb than ever before.

Hannah's Dream
